Philippe I — known to history primarily as King of Castile through his marriage to Juana — ruled Luxembourg as part of his Burgundian inheritance, and his coinage there reflects the administrative fragmentation of the Low Countries under Habsburg management. This issue falls within the final years before his sudden death in 1506 at age 28, an event that triggered Juana's breakdown and set in motion decades of Castilian regency politics.
The billon standard used here, at roughly 37.5% silver, was not unique to Luxembourg but reflects the broader debasement pressures affecting Burgundian coinage in the early sixteenth century as the Habsburgs stretched resources across an expanding territorial portfolio.
