Описание аверса	Central field bears the Costa Rican national coat of arms, depicting a landscape with three volcanoes, a sailing ship on each side, and a rising sun, all within an ornate baroque shield. The shield is flanked by laurel branches curving upward from the base and meeting at the lower edge of the shield. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters, while the date appears prominently in the exergue at the bottom of the coin.

The Independence date is inscribed on or near the column. The circular legend AMERICA CENTRAL arcs along the upper periphery, while the lower portion of the field bears the gold fineness expressed in karats (21), the denomination (1/2 E), and the assayer's initials (J.B.) identifying engraver and assayer Juan Barth.
