Costa Rica's fractional gold coinage of this period was produced at the Casa de Moneda in San José, which had only been striking gold since the late 1820s following independence from the Central American Federation. Output was modest and erratic — political instability and inconsistent gold supply from domestic sources meant that dies were reused across multiple years, making precise dating of individual pieces genuinely difficult. KM#97 spans fourteen years for exactly that reason.
