| Description de l’avers | Central field features the ornate royal coat of arms of Great Britain displayed on an elaborately decorated shield, supported by a lion and a unicorn as heraldic supporters flanking either side, with foliate and acanthus scrollwork framing the composition. A crown surmounts the shield, and the entire device is rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style characteristic of William Wyon's engraving. The circular legend reads GEORGIVS IV D:G: BRITANNIARUM REX F:D: running around the full periphery of the coin. |

The British West Indies fractional coinage of 1821–22 was not a colonial initiative but a direct response to the chronic shortage of small silver circulating in the Caribbean trade economy, where Spanish milled dollars had long served by default. Parliament authorized this issue specifically to displace that reliance. Production was limited across both years, and the series was never extended — making survivors in any grade genuinely scarce rather than artificially so.
