The inscription I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG... arcs across the field, beginning the phrase completed on the reverse. The American Legion's official emblem appears prominently above the flag, linking the commemorative theme to the centennial of the organization. The legend OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completes the Pledge of Allegiance phrase begun on the obverse, arcing across the field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are also present in the legend. The design was executed by engraver Joseph Menna in a bold, perspective-driven composition befitting a modern United States commemorative half dollar. |
