The American Legion's official emblem appears prominently above the flag, linking the commemorative theme to the centennial of the organization. The legend OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completes the Pledge of Allegiance phrase begun on the obverse, arcing across the field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are also present in the legend.
