Obverse description The obverse depicts two children standing side by side and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the young girl wearing an oversized American Legion cap belonging to her grandfather. The figures are rendered in high relief against a plain field, conveying a sense of patriotic reverence and generational connection. The legend LIBERTY and the date 2019 appear within the design, accompanied by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The inscription I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG... arcs across the field, beginning the phrase completed on the reverse. The composition was engraved by Phebe Hemphill in a naturalistic, narrative style characteristic of modern United States commemorative coinage.

Reverse description The reverse presents a dramatic low-angle view of the American flag atop a tall flagpole as perceived from the vantage point of children looking upward, with the flag rendered in dynamic, waving relief. The American Legion's official emblem appears prominently above the flag, linking the commemorative theme to the centennial of the organization. The legend OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completes the Pledge of Allegiance phrase begun on the obverse, arcing across the field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are also present in the legend. The design was executed by engraver Joseph Menna in a bold, perspective-driven composition befitting a modern United States commemorative half dollar.
