Zwolle's daalder coinage occupies an odd corner of Dutch monetary history. The city, an Overijssel member of the Hanseatic League, retained minting rights well into the seventeenth century despite persistent pressure from the States-General to consolidate coinage under provincial authority. The "Arendrijksdaalder" name derives from the double-headed eagle — a reference to the Holy Roman imperial arms under Matthias I, whose nominal suzerainty the city invoked to legitimize continued independent striking long after such arrangements had become politically inconvenient.
The 35-year production window reflects bureaucratic inertia more than demand.
