The Mutawakkilite Kingdom issued these small bronzes under Imam Yahya ibn Muhammad, who had consolidated power over highland Yemen only after decades of conflict with the Ottomans — the 1911 Treaty of Da'an gave him significant autonomy, and the Ottoman collapse after World War I left him effectively sovereign. The 1⁄160 riyal denomination reflects a fractional system built around the traditional qirsh and its subdivisions, a monetary structure more rooted in custom than administrative convenience.
These are the first coins struck for the independent Yemeni imamate, making Y#1 a genuine inaugural issue for the series.
