| Description du revers | The reverse carries a composite vignette of iconic European architectural landmarks arranged across the full note width: the Torre de Belém (Lisbon) at left, the Colosseum (Rome) at lower centre, the Eiffel Tower (Paris) in the central field, the Sagrada Família (Barcelona) at right of centre, and the Manneken-Pis statue (Brussels) at far right, all set against a lavender guilloche underprint with a row of EU stars along the upper border. The commemorative 0 Euro souvenir note program, administered through licensed issuers across Europe and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, has been running since 2015. These notes have no legal tender status anywhere — the face value is a fiction, a workaround that allows them to carry the Euro visual identity without violating ECB regulations on currency imitation. Oberthur's involvement gives them genuine banknote-grade paper and security features, which is part of the appeal to collectors.
The John T. Essberger is a decommissioned ocean-going rescue cruiser operated for decades by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS), now on static display at Technik Museum Speyer. The DGzRS operates entirely on donations — no government funding — which made the vessel's working life unusual among European maritime rescue infrastructure.
