The commemorative 0 Euro souvenir note program, administered through licensed issuers across Europe and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, has been running since 2015. These notes have no legal tender status anywhere — the face value is a fiction, a workaround that allows them to carry the Euro visual identity without violating ECB regulations on currency imitation. Oberthur's involvement gives them genuine banknote-grade paper and security features, which is part of the appeal to collectors.
The John T. Essberger is a decommissioned ocean-going rescue cruiser operated for decades by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS), now on static display at Technik Museum Speyer. The DGzRS operates entirely on donations — no government funding — which made the vessel's working life unusual among European maritime rescue infrastructure.
