Tauromenion — modern Taormina on Sicily's northeastern coast — occupied an unusual political position during this period, having survived the Roman reduction of Syracuse in 212 BC as a nominally autonomous ally rather than a subject city. Bronze issues of this size from the mid-second century BC reflect the town's continued operation of a local mint under Roman hegemony, a privilege not extended to all Sicilian communities.
