Korkyra — modern Corfu — occupied an unusually strategic position on the Adriatic trade routes, and the island's bronze coinage of this period reflects a municipal economy largely independent of mainland Epeiros despite nominal regional ties. The city had been a Corinthian colony since the 7th century BC and retained a fierce commercial identity, periodically allying with Athens, Sparta, or whoever best served its mercantile interests.
