The design is struck in lower relief than the obverse and exhibits the characteristic flatness of a secondary hammer blow on a klippe flan. No legend or lettering appears on this face. The overall presentation is typical of small-denomination Salzburg Pfennig coinage of the early seventeenth century. |

Markus Sittikus von Hohenems was elected Archbishop of Salzburg in 1612 after the forced resignation of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had been arrested by Bavarian forces and would die in captivity nine years later. The klippe format — struck as a square planchet rather than a round one — was a deliberate prestige choice, associating the new archbishop's earliest issues with the elaborate presentation pieces favored by German courts of the period.
At under a gram, this is among the smallest klippe strikes recorded from the Salzburg mint.
