Obverse description Central field features the arms of the Archbishopric of Salzburg within an ornate cartouche: a quartered shield displaying the Salzburg arms (horizontal bars) in the upper half and the lion rampant of the Hohenems family in the lower half, surmounted by an ecclesiastical hat. Flanking the shield on either side are the divided date numerals '16' to the left and '12' to the right. The whole is set within a beaded or rope-form inner border on the square klippe flan, with no surrounding legend. The die work is characteristic of early seventeenth-century Salzburg hammered coinage, rendered in bold, somewhat crude relief.
