Struck during the second year of the Bar Kokhba Revolt, this issue belongs to a series produced by overstruck Roman provincial silver — almost certainly denarii and Nabataean drachms already in circulation in Judea. The rebels had no mint infrastructure of their own; they requisitioned existing coinage and re-struck it with Jewish iconography and Hebrew dating as a direct act of political defiance against Rome. The underlying host coin is frequently visible on surviving examples, and identifying the original type can itself be a numismatic exercise.
Year Two corresponds to approximately 133–134 CE, before the Roman reconquest under Julius Severus finally crushed the revolt in 135 CE at Betar.
