Pedro ruled as Prince Regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra — in a palace coup that went largely unchallenged. These reais were struck during that regency period before Pedro formally assumed the crown as Pedro II in 1683. The issues span three Gomes varieties distinguished primarily by minor die differences in the cross arrangement, which accounts for the three separate catalog references under a single reign and denomination.
