Reverse description Central field displays an elaborate quartered cross composed of interlocking geometric elements and pellets, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The arms of the cross are decorated with small circles at their intersections, producing a highly ornate, architectural appearance. The surrounding legend in Latin occupies the outer border and is separated from the inner circle by a ring of beads. The overall style is consistent with Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the period.

Additional information

Pedro ruled as Prince Regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra — in a palace coup that went largely unchallenged. These reais were struck during that regency period before Pedro formally assumed the crown as Pedro II in 1683. The issues span three Gomes varieties distinguished primarily by minor die differences in the cross arrangement, which accounts for the three separate catalog references under a single reign and denomination.
