| Obverse description | Central field bears a royal crown above the Roman numerals XXXX (denoting 40 réis), all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend in Latin runs along the outer border. The design is characteristic of Portuguese hammered coinage of the late 17th century, with the crown rendered in a stylised, slightly irregular form typical of hand-struck production. Pellet stops separate elements of the inscription. |

| Additional information |
Pedro ruled as Prince Regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra — in a palace coup that went largely unchallenged. These reais were struck during that regency period before Pedro formally assumed the crown as Pedro II in 1683. The issues span three Gomes varieties distinguished primarily by minor die differences in the cross arrangement, which accounts for the three separate catalog references under a single reign and denomination.
