Afonso VI's reign was effectively a regency in everything but name — his mother Luísa de Gusmão had governed Portugal through much of the Restoration War, and by the time these reais were struck, court factions were already maneuvering to displace him. The monetary system he inherited was still adjusting to the demands of a country that had been fighting Spain since 1640 for independence it would not have formally recognized until 1668.
The three Gomes varieties catalogued under this type reflect sequential die changes across the production window, a detail that rewards closer attention when attributing individual examples.
