| Descripción del reverso | Central design consists of a plain Greek cross with pellets in each angle, set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field carries the Latin legend +IN.HOC.SIGNO.VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), a motto associated with the Portuguese monarchy during this period. The reverse retains the characteristic irregular flan and variable strike of hammered coinage, with the legend distributed around the entire circumference. The overall composition follows the established type of Portuguese silver vintens of the reign of Afonso VI. |

Afonso VI's reign was effectively a regency in everything but name — his mother Luísa de Gusmão had governed Portugal through much of the Restoration War, and by the time these reais were struck, court factions were already maneuvering to displace him. The monetary system he inherited was still adjusting to the demands of a country that had been fighting Spain since 1640 for independence it would not have formally recognized until 1668.
The three Gomes varieties catalogued under this type reflect sequential die changes across the production window, a detail that rewards closer attention when attributing individual examples.
