Obverse description Royal cypher of João III displayed centrally within the field: the letters IO and III separated by a pellet, surmounted by a royal crown rendered in relief. Below the cypher, a horizontal row of four pellets or crosses forms a decorative band. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend distributed around the periphery between the inner and outer rims. The hammered flan exhibits characteristic irregular edges consistent with mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese minting practice.

Reverse description A bold Latin cross with plain arms occupies the central field, its four quadrants each containing a large quadrifoil (four-petalled rosette) in high relief, the petals clearly articulated. Small pellets or points are placed at the terminals and intersections of the cross arms. The entire central composition is contained within a beaded inner circle, beyond which the circular Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES runs around the periphery. The reverse design follows the Manueline-to-Johannine typological tradition of Portuguese silver coinage, with the cross symbolising the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Crown.
