Pedro governed as regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra — in a palace coup engineered partly through the annulment of Afonso's marriage, which Pedro promptly claimed along with the bride. The regency coinage issued under his name occupied an awkward constitutional position: Pedro held royal authority without the royal title, a situation that persisted until Afonso's death in 1683.
The vintem denomination had circulated in Portugal since the early sixteenth century. At 20 réis, it was the everyday small change of Lisbon's market stalls and harbor transactions.
