The "wheel" copper-alloy coins of Portuguese India's northern province were struck at Damão specifically to supply the Baçaim (Bassein) market — a logistical arrangement that reflects how thinly the Estado da India's minting infrastructure was stretched by the early eighteenth century. João V's long reign from 1706 to 1750 meant this type was produced across several decades, during which Portuguese control of the Konkan coast was under sustained Maratha pressure; Baçaim itself fell to the Marathas in 1739, effectively truncating the coin's intended circulation territory mid-issue.
