This piece dates to the co-reign of Johanna and Wenceslas, a dynastic pairing that held Brabant through a period of sustained factional pressure from both the urban guilds and rival noble houses. Wenceslas of Luxembourg brought the duchy into the orbit of his half-brother, Emperor Charles IV, a connection that shaped Brabant's monetary policy during the 1370s as much as any internal consideration.
Witte 408 places this issue within a tightly catalogued sequence. Wenceslas died in December 1383, after which Johanna ruled alone until 1406.
