| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central field bearing the Portuguese royal coat of arms — the escutcheon of Portugal featuring the five quinas (inescutcheons) arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, enclosed within a plain shield surmounted by a royal crown. Flanking the shield are the mint master's initials 'L-G', referring to the assayer or mint official at Lisbon. The encircling Latin legend reads '+PORTVG : ET : ALGARB : D : G L - G', proclaiming Sebastião I as King of Portugal and the Algarves, by the Grace of God. The legend is separated by pellet stops in the standard manner of Portuguese hammered silver of the period. The reverse exhibits the characteristic irregular strike and slightly uneven flan typical of hand-hammered coinage of the sixteenth century. |
