Leopold IV ruled Tyrol under perpetually strained finances, caught between the costs of maintaining Alpine passes — commercially vital corridors linking Italy to the northern territories — and repeated dynastic disputes within the Habsburg line following the division of 1379. The small silver Vierer circulated heavily in market and toll transactions throughout the Inntal region, which is why surviving examples in anything above well-worn condition are genuinely uncommon.
