Bukhara Sogd coinage of this period represents a monetary tradition operating entirely outside the Arab-Sasanian framework that was reshaping Central Asia during the same decades. The Sogdian merchants and local rulers of the Bukharan oasis continued striking their own types well into the Umayyad advance, and the absence of any legend on this piece is itself historically significant — it places the issue before the gradual adoption of Arabic and then bilingual Sogdian-Arabic inscriptions that followed administrative consolidation under the caliphate.
Zeimal's classification remains the primary reference for this extraordinarily complex series, where typological distinctions often rest on altar form and flan preparation rather than epigraphy.
