Kastilo — modern Castulo, near Linares in Jaén province — was one of the wealthiest cities in Hispania Ulterior during the late Republic, its prosperity built almost entirely on the silver and lead mines of the Sierra Morena. Rome had taken a sharp interest in the region since the Hannibalic wars, and Kastilo's bronze civic coinage reflects a community navigating the transition from Iberian autonomy to Roman administrative absorption. The city minted in its own name well into the first century BC, longer than many neighboring mints managed.
