The fish are rendered in a stylized manner typical of late Punic Iberian coinage. A Neo-Punic inscription appears in the field, reading the city name. The reverse design is a hallmark type of Abderan coinage and reflects the economic importance of the bluefin tuna trade in the region. |

Abdera on the Iberian coast — modern Adra in Almería — was a Phoenician foundation, and its coinage retained Punic administrative character long after Rome had reorganized most of the peninsula. Issues of this type were produced during a period of intense political flux, spanning the Sertorian War and the subsequent Caesarian consolidation of Hispania Ulterior. The city's loyalty shifted more than once during those decades.
CNH 4 places this among the latest autonomous bronze output from Punic Iberia before Roman municipal coinage models displaced local traditions entirely.
