Iltirta was an Iberian city in the territory of the Ilergetes, located near modern Lleida in Catalonia. Its coinage emerged under Roman provincial tolerance following the Second Punic War, as Rome permitted allied and subject communities in Hispania to strike bronze for local exchange rather than impose a uniform currency on a region it had only recently wrested from Carthaginian influence. The Ilergetes themselves had sided with Rome during the war, a political alignment that likely secured Iltirta's minting privileges earlier than many neighboring communities.
The GCV#21 / Heiss#15 reference places this piece within the well-documented but chronologically contested early Iberian series, where absolute dating still relies heavily on stratigraphic context from excavations at Lleida and surrounding Roman-period sites.
