The 1659 Toruń three-ducat piece was struck in the immediate aftermath of the First Northern War — the devastating Swedish occupation that left large parts of Royal Prussia economically hollowed out. Toruń itself had been besieged, and the city's right to mint continued to function as a assertion of civic autonomy under the Polish crown even as that autonomy was being systematically eroded.
Jan II Kazimierz abdicated in 1668, and the Toruń mint's output during his reign is notably irregular in both quality and surviving numbers. This three-ducat denomination was never a circulation piece; it was struck for presentation or diplomatic purposes.
