The "trojak historyczny" — historical threepenny — was struck not as a currency reform measure but as a deliberate act of political theater. Issued in 1767 under Stanisław August Poniatowski, the series was intended to invoke Poland's numismatic past and burnish the king's image as a patron of national history. The Kraków mint, by then a secondary operation compared to Warsaw, handled this issue.
1767 was the year Russian ambassador Nikolai Repnin effectively dictated Polish domestic policy, forcing the Sejm into submission. A coin series invoking historical grandeur while the issuing king was becoming a Russian client has a certain grim irony.
