Elbing — now Elbląg in northern Poland — came under Swedish control during the Polish-Swedish War, and Gustaw II Adolf authorized municipal coinage there as a practical measure to keep commerce functioning in occupied territory. The city had a long tradition of issuing its own silver, and the Swedes leveraged that existing infrastructure rather than establishing new minting operations.
Kopicki 9618 places this among the documented trojak issues of the occupation period, a series that attracts serious collector attention precisely because Swedish-authorized Polish municipal coinage is a narrow and well-defined field. Elbing returned to Polish sovereignty under the Truce of Stuhmsdorf in 1635.
