Phalanna was a minor Thessalian city whose coinage output was limited even by regional standards — the trihemiobol denomination itself, worth one and a half obols, served the granular day-to-day transactions that larger Thessalian issues like those of Larissa couldn't efficiently handle. The city sat in the Perrhaebian territory of northern Thessaly, a zone repeatedly contested between Macedonian influence and local Thessalian leagues throughout the mid-fourth century, precisely the window this coin occupies.
The BCD collection reference here is significant: Luc Mildenberg's Thessalian holdings, later catalogued as BCD Thessaly, established the die-linkage framework still used to sequence Phalanna's tiny output.
