Tremissis - Theodosius II Trophy between two stars, Constantinopolis

Theodosius II's long reign — the longest of any eastern emperor, stretching from 402 to 450 — was marked far less by military triumph than by diplomacy, bribery, and treaty payments to Attila's Hunnic confederacy. The trophy type on this tremissis is therefore something of an official fiction, projecting martial confidence at a court that had just agreed to double its annual tribute to the Huns following the humiliating Treaty of Margus in 435.

Constantinople's mint dominated tremissis production in this period. The RIC X series for Theodosius II is notably complex in its officina sequencing.
