Recopolis was founded in 578 by Leovigild and named for his son Recared — the same Recared who, after converting from Arianism to Nicene Christianity in 589, became the first Visigothic king to rule a religiously unified Iberian peninsula. The mint at Recopolis is one of only a handful of purpose-built Visigothic urban foundations known archaeologically, excavated near modern Zorita de los Canes in Guadalajara province.
