Recaredo I's conversion from Arianism to Nicene Christianity at the Third Council of Toledo in 589 was among the most consequential religious-political acts in early medieval Iberia, and his coinage from Emerita Augusta — modern Mérida — reflects the administrative continuity that made that transition possible.
