Obverse description Helmeted, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Majorian facing right, the helmet adorned with a triple spray crest. The emperor holds a forward-pointing spear in his right hand and supports on his left arm a shield decorated with a cross. The obverse legend, rendered in Latin, encircles the imperial effigy within a beaded border, reading D N IVLIVS MAIOR-IANVS P F AVG, affirming the full titulature of the Western Roman emperor in whose name this Visigothic imitation was struck.

Additional information

Majorian was murdered in August 461 on the orders of his own magister militum, Ricimer, ending one of the last serious attempts to reassert Western imperial authority over the federate kingdoms. The Visigoths had struck tremisses in his name during his reign, but the political relationship was never stable — Majorian had launched a major campaign against the Visigoths in 458 before pivoting to his ill-fated naval expedition against the Vandals. These coins exist in the narrow window between those two conflicts.
