Basiliscus seized the Eastern throne in January 475 while the legitimate emperor Zeno fled to Isauria, holding power for just twenty months before Zeno returned and had him imprisoned — according to sources, sealed inside a dry cistern in Cappadocia and left to starve. The coinage struck during this usurpation is consequently among the briefest and most tightly bounded issues of the fifth century, produced entirely within Constantinople before the regime collapsed in August 476.
That August 476 date is historically loaded: Romulus Augustulus was deposed in the West the same month Basiliscus fell in the East.
