Arichis II governed Benevento as a Lombard duke under Frankish overlordship until 774, when Charlemagne's destruction of the Lombard kingdom prompted him to elevate his own title to "princeps" — effectively declaring Benevento an autonomous principality rather than submit. These tremisses predate that declaration, struck while he still nominally acknowledged Lombard royal authority, which makes the series a precise political timestamp for the years immediately before the Frankish conquest reshuffled the entire Italian south.
