The figure is rendered in a stylized Byzantine manner typical of Bulgarian trachy coinage of the fourteenth century. The Christogram IC-XC appears divided across the field to either side of the bust. The overall composition follows standard Byzantine iconographic conventions adapted by the Vidin mint workshop. |

Ivan Sratsimir ruled the Vidin Tsardom as a splinter state after the Second Bulgarian Empire fractured under Tsar Ivan Alexander, who divided his realm between sons rather than risk civil war. The Vidin mint operated under persistent Ottoman pressure throughout this period — Sratsimir was captured by Sigismund of Hungary after the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396 and the tsardom dissolved shortly after, making the window for these issues narrower than the date range suggests for any single reign phase.
