Obverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed on a crowned shield occupying the central field, flanked by the mint marks 'P' and 'O' on either side, denoting the Porto mint. The shield bears the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with five bezants each, enclosed within a bordure of castles. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : PORTVGALIAE ; ET P-O, rendered in gothic-influenced lettering characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Portuguese coinage. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with the typical shallow, uneven relief of hammered silver production.
