A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : PORTVGALIAE ; ET P-O, rendered in gothic-influenced lettering characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Portuguese coinage. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with the typical shallow, uneven relief of hammered silver production. |
