Reverse description A large fleurée cross with fleur-de-lis terminals occupies the central field, with a small six-pointed star or mullet placed in each of the four angles between the arms of the cross. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire device, reading IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — in bold capital lettering. The relief of the cross is bold relative to the surrounding flat field, a hallmark of Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the reign of Sebastião I. The flan edges are slightly irregular, consistent with hand-cut hammered production of the period.
