A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — an Imperial Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown, with the lettering separated by small decorative stops and a beaded outer border enclosing the entire design. |
