| Reverse description | Central field dominated by a floriated cross pattée with fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, the four quadrants each charged with a small six-pointed star or mullet, all executed in the hammered relief style typical of Portuguese Renaissance coinage. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — an Imperial Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown, with the lettering separated by small decorative stops and a beaded outer border enclosing the entire design. |
