Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the quinas shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants, enclosed within the bordure of seven castles — all surmounted by a royal crown. The mint marks P and R flank the shield at left and right respectively, with small decorative rosettes or mullets separating them from the shield. A continuous beaded border frames the design, and the circular Latin legend reads SEBASTIANVS I REX PORTVGALIAE ET P-R, interrupted by punctuation marks, running around the outer rim in Gothic-influenced lettering characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese coinage.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : PORTVGALIAE ; ET P-R
