| Beschrijving keerzijde | A boldly struck Cross of Christ (Cruz de Cristo) centered in the field, its distinctive splayed and hollowed arms with curved indentations clearly rendered in the hammered style. Four pellets or roundels are disposed in the angles between the arms of the cross, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circumferential legend in Latin, IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), referencing the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Crown, runs between the inner beaded circle and the toothed outer border. The overall execution is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Manueline-to-Joanine transition coinage produced at Porto. |
