| Descrizione del dritto | The royal arms of Portugal displayed on an ornate shield occupying the central field, surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate foliate finials. The shield features the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with five bezants (quinas) in saltire, bordered by a red bordure (castles), rendered in high relief typical of early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage. The mint marks P and O flank the shield at the mid-field on left and right respectively, identifying this piece as a product of the Porto mint. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding circumferential legend in Latin, which reads: + IOHANES : 3 : R : P : ET : A : I : D : G : C N : C: ETH P - O, the whole enclosed within a toothed outer border. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | A boldly struck Cross of Christ (Cruz de Cristo) centered in the field, its distinctive splayed and hollowed arms with curved indentations clearly rendered in the hammered style. Four pellets or roundels are disposed in the angles between the arms of the cross, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circumferential legend in Latin, IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), referencing the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Crown, runs between the inner beaded circle and the toothed outer border. The overall execution is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Manueline-to-Joanine transition coinage produced at Porto. |
